1. How does identity verification work?
Pizza works with Stripe to conduct identity verification online. Stripe builds technology that’s used by many companies around the world such as Amazon, Google, and Zoom.
Stripe helps Pizza confirm your identity by conducting the following checks:
- Stripe captures images of the front and back of your government issued photo ID driving licence and reviews it to make sure that the document is authentic. They’ve built an automated identity verification technology that looks for patterns to help determine if a driving licence document is real or fake. This process is like a bank clerk checking your ID document to confirm that it’s real.
- Stripe captures photos of your face and reviews them to confirm that the photo ID driving licence belongs to you. They’ve built automated identity verification technology that uses distinctive physiological characteristics of your face (known as biometric identifiers) to match the photos of your face with the photo on the driving licence. This process is similar to a bank clerk confirming that the photo on your driving licence is you based on your appearance – but it’s a higher-tech and more accurate way to identify you as a unique person.
- Stripe collects your name, date of birth, and driving licence number, and validates that it’s real. They’ll check this information against a global set of databases to confirm that it exists.
Stripe asks for your consent before collecting and using your biometric information. They’ll only use your verification data in accordance with the permissions you grant before starting the verification process, and based on their Privacy Policy.

2. What are the best practices for successful verification?
Before starting the verification process, here’s what you need:
• A valid government-issued photo ID driving licence. Not a photocopy or a picture of a government-issued photo ID driving licence. Make sure that the photo ID driving licence isn’t expired.
• A device with a camera – use a mobile device if possible. Cameras on mobile devices typically take higher-quality photos than a webcam.
The quality of the images you capture affects success rates dramatically. Below are a few best practices to help make sure that your verification succeeds:
• Capture a clear image. Make sure that the images aren’t too dark or bright, and don’t have a glare. Hold steady and allow your camera to focus to avoid blurry photos.
• Don’t block any part of your photo ID driving licence in the image. Ideally you can lay it flat to take the photo.
• Don’t block any part of your face. Remove sunglasses, masks, or other accessories.
• Find a location with ambient lighting. Avoid spaces with strong overhead lights that cast a shadow on your face or photo ID driving licence. Avoid sitting directly in front of a bright light which can wash out your face and add a glare to your photo ID driving licence.
3. Who has access to my verification data?
Both Pizza and Stripe have access to the information that you submit through the verification flow. Stripe uses access controls and security standards that are at least as stringent as those used to handle their own KYC and payments compliance data.

You can view Pizza’s Privacy Notice to see how we deal with your personal information.
4. Why am I being asked to verify my identity?
At Pizza, our aim is to provide car insurance that offers fair value to everyone. We ask for ID verification so we truly know who every customer is, which helps us combat fraud, keep prices down and allows our unique offering of giving a Slice Back.
5. Why was I rejected
Common reasons a driving licence may be rejected include:
Image and document quality
- The image is unclear, blurred, too dark, or affected by glare.
- The full document is not visible (for example, only the front of a two-sided licence is shown).
- A black-and-white scan or photocopy was uploaded instead of a colour image.
- Part of the licence or the holder’s face is obscured (for example by sunglasses or a mask).
- The licence appears damaged or has been altered.
Information and validity issues
- The licence has expired.
- Details on the licence (name, date of birth or licence number) do not exactly match the information in the Stripe Dashboard.
- The document is not an accepted form of government-issued photo ID or was issued in an unsupported country.
- The document was uploaded incorrectly (for example, sent by email or password-protected).
Fraud checks
- Stripe’s automated verification systems may reject the licence if it detects signs of fraud, such as a fake or manipulated document.
What to do next
- Check that all details in your Stripe Dashboard are correct.
- Re-upload clear, colour images of the full, valid licence using the official upload process.
- If the issue continues, contact us at help@pizzainsurance.co.uk for further assistance.
6. Can I get verified using a different method?
Pizza requires our customers to verify their identity to help us minimise fraudulent activity and ensure we can deliver on our promise of giving a Slice Back. For security reasons we will only accept verification of a government-issued photo ID driving licence.
7. How can I access or delete my verification data?
Stripe doesn’t delete data on behalf of Pizza when they store the data as our processor, because we must first conduct our own legal analysis on whether deletion is appropriate. To exercise your rights of access or deletion of your verification data, contact us at dpo@pizzainsurance.co.uk. We will respond within one month.
If, however, you do decide to reach out to Stripe directly requesting deletion, they will respond to the request with respect to any data that they hold as data controller, and will also recommend that you reach out to us to request deletion.
